Local SUU Students Work With Habitat For Humanity For Alternative Spring Break

When you hear the words “spring break” it often brings to mind images of college students heading of to warm, usually beach locations and participating in non-stop hours and general debauchery. Southern Utah University students just returned from their spring break, and while I'm sure there were some who engaged in recreation and relaxation, a group of students had a different idea on how to spend their time off.

Some students and staff embarked on a life-changing journey during their spring break, partnering with Habitat for Humanity in Sumter, South Carolina, to construct homes for families in need. Led by Pam Branin, director of the Community Engagement Center, and Jessica Walker, a recent nursing graduate, nine participants from various majors immersed themselves in a week-long project aimed at not just building houses but also fostering personal growth and community spirit.

Branin emphasized the importance of such experiences in shaping SUU students into active and contributing community members. Through hands-on construction work, participants not only developed practical skills but also learned the value of patience, perseverance, and teamwork. Addisyn Mikkelson, a human nutrition major, highlighted the kindness and hospitality of the people they encountered in South Carolina, emphasizing the lessons learned from collaborating with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
