Avoid Costly Fines: Arizona’s School Zone & Bus Safety Laws
Back-to-School Safety Tips for Arizona Drivers
The annual back-to-school crunch is here in Cochise County. We're gathering school supplies all over town, filling those backpacks with notebooks, pencils, and folders. Then going through last year's school clothes, only to find the kids have grown, and it's time to hit the road again for more shopping.
As we prepare for another school year, this is the perfect time to review some key safety updates to ensure the safety of our children as they return to school.

Understanding Arizona’s School Zone Speed Limits
As schools reopen and students return, drivers should be mindful of traffic patterns.

Be alert for slower traffic near school crosswalks. Arizona's school zones will drop traffic speeds down to a 15 mph speed limit during designated hours when signs are posted. You may see these temporary signs posted in the middle of the street or on the side of the road. These signs supersede any posted speed limits.
Speeding in these zones can result in double fines. For example, driving 10 mph over the limit can cost you $500 if you're caught exceeding the limit. Drivers who violate the speed limit will also receive two points on their license, and extreme speeding could lead to criminal charges.
It's essential to slow down, stay alert, and watch for crossing guards and students, especially during morning drop-offs and afternoon pickups. However, be aware that speed limits are in effect throughout the school day. If school is in session, the speed limits are in effect.

Bus Route Safety in Arizona
School buses on Arizona roads present even more safety concerns.
If a school bus is stopped with its stop sign extended and flashing lights activated, drivers must come to a complete stop. This law applies to both directions of traffic, unless the road is divided by a physical barrier or an unpaved median.
If you illegally pass a school bus, the penalties are:
- First offense: Minimum $250 fine.
- Second offense in a 36-month period: Minimum $750 fine and license suspension up to 6 months.
- Third offense: Minimum $1,000 fine and license suspension for 6–12 months.
Why It Pays to Leave Early During School Season
As our kids return to school, their safety is a concern for everyone. Be sure to leave a little earlier so you have ample time to arrive at your destination.
Getting stuck behind a school bus or in a school zone can add extra time, but our children's safety is our top priority.
