Utahns are not Utahans

I have never heard someone use the word Utahans, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t happened and I’m glad this is getting cleared up before the problem grows.  Can you imagine if that pronunciation became common place?

In Utah we already feel a little insecure about our backward ways and adding a silly nickname for residents wouldn’t help. Thank goodness those elected officials in charge of making laws and designating things took care of this one.

Governor Cox Signs the Bill

If you didn’t know, in the 2025 legislative session there was a bill proposed to address exactly what citizens of our state will be called. S.B. 230 Utah Resident Terminology Amendments sponsored by Daniel McCay states its purpose:

Establishes ‘Utahn’ as the state demonym.

I have never heard of the word demonym and that is also a positive outcome of this bill. In fact, if you don’t use the term Utahn, I would prefer to be referred to as a demonym more than I would a Utahan.

Props to our government officials for taking on the hard tasks, braving controversy, and getting this done once and for all. I and the other Utahns or, I personally will allow demonym, in the state salute you.
