Slow Down…Speeding in Utah School Zones Will Cost You Big Money
Last year a bill was signed into law that raised the fines for speeding in a school zone and not obeying school bus signals. With school back in session this is a good reminder to keep your eye out for flashing lights and kids in the crosswalks.
Fines for Driving Past a School Bus when Lights are Flashing
The purpose for these increases was aimed at protecting school children and to make them similar to those given out in construction zones. These increases were significant. Driving past a bus with red lights flashing will cost you money and community service.
The law says in Utah that the fine for the first offense of driving past a school bus with flashing lights is 10 hours of service and a $1,000 fine. It doubles for a second offense and goes to $3,000 with 40 hours for a third offense.

30 to 39 mph gets a fine of $420 and 40 miles per hour over will cost you $760. Make sure to leave with plenty of time this week as you find those school zones lit up. You don’t want to endanger kids or crossing guards and you don’t want to fork over a bunch of money in fines.
