Happy Mermaid From Utah Wins First in Speed Challenge
Athlete from Utah Proves Fastest in Merlympics
The Olympics haven’t begun but already Utah is showing up in what is a big deal in the world of mythical underwater creatures. This woman from Provo proved to be the fastest in a competition featuring mermaids.
The Merlympics takes place in Geneva, Switzerland each year and features athletes wearing a large fin over their legs. There were five events and Mia Sim, 22 of Provo was the fastest in the speed event setting the fastest mark ever. Pretty impressive from a fish that grew up in the desert.
The events include:
Ecology: Competitors show their ability to clean trash from a body of water.
Figures: This involves performing mermaid specific tasks.
Underwater Posing: You dive down and pose for a camera.
Rescue: Involves lifesaving skills underwater.
Speed: A 50-meter race along the top of the water. This is the one Mia holds the record for. Here’s a video of the 2024 event in Switzerland.
Let’s Keep the Momentum Going into Paris
Now that we have a taste of winning in Utah, let’s keep those W’s coming. Utah is being represented by 25 Olympians in the upcoming games in Paris. Take what Mia has done and emblazon it on those competitor’s minds.

I would be interested in the Merlympics but I am not a good swimmer. I would like to see them add a trident throwing event and maybe who looks good sitting on an underwater throne wearing a crown competition. I think I would have a chance.
