“Hang Your lights Somewhere Else,” See This Utah Law
Can You Add Christmas Lights To Your Car?
I was part of the Christmas light parade for several years in Cedar City and it is fun trying to figure out a way to light up your vehicle. So, you may wonder if you can drive around town all December with these lights?
A vehicle in England was pulled over for having Christmas lights attached to the hood and sides. The police said it was too distracting for other drivers and it turns out that you can run afoul of the law in the United States for the same reason including in Utah.
The Law in Utah About Lights on Your Car
Checking the Utah code, there are some specific lights you cannot put on your car and it has to do with not distracting other drivers. Stay away from red and blue lights. Obviously, this will make people think they are seeing a police car. Also, no flashing lights. This will also distract other drivers.
You can probably get away with a lighted wreath on the back window. If it obscures your license plate, that isn’t going to fly. A lighted Olaf secured to a side window probably won’t get you a ticket as that character was pretty annoying and will cause other drivers to avoid your vehicle making it safer.

If you really want to celebrate the holiday, I would skip the lights and create some bodywork that makes my car look like Santa’s sleigh. Even better, get some reindeer to pull it and save on gas.
