College Graduates Competing Against AI for Jobs Will Find Things Better in Utah
Reports of recent graduates struggling to find jobs are increasing, and some of it can be blamed on the economy and some on AI. In Utah, the outlook is better, but still not as high as earlier in the year.
Entry Level Positions Harder to Come By
Niki Hailey’s son recently complained about the job market for recent college graduates and that neither political party is addressing the problem. These are young people who graduated with degrees from prestigious colleges that can’t find work.
Part of this has to do with uncertainty in the economy. When businesses are not sure what will happen in the future, they are less likely to hire new positions. They may put off hiring entry level staff which are just the jobs new graduates need.
Businesses are also discovering new uses for AI. More of the jobs of gathering information or customer service where someone could learn the business are no longer needed when artificial intelligence can do the work.
Utah is Doing Better for Graduates
The economy in the west and particularly in Utah is doing better than nationally. In August the unemployment rate in Utah stood at 3.3% while the U.S. as a whole was 4.3%. This means more jobs are available in the beehive state.
The same is true for job growth. The august report has 1.9% growth for Utah that is more than double the national rate of 0.8%. That is better as compared to the U.S. growth but a slight drop from the moth before where growth in Utah was 2.3%.

How this can be addressed by Washington is still up in the air. The picture will be clearer as we start to see how AI will affect jobs and where the economy stands next year.
