Utah HVAC Techs Are Being Recruited Away By Data Centers in Other States

The rise of artificial intelligence and the huge data centers they bring have created a demand for a job you may not have thought about. All those computers need to be cooled and that has made the demand for HVAC technicians grow like crazy.

Talent Drain: Why Utah is Losing HVAC Technicians

Even though Utah isn't home to a lot of these data centers, other states that have them are hiring away our qualified people. Add in the fact that many of those with experience fixing and installing cooling units are older and have begun to retire.

This has created a demand and according to Randstad, some companies have an easier time hiring a software developer than an HVAC technician. On their site they list jobs from $72,000 to $104.000 a year if you have the experience.

Utah’s Housing Market and HVAC Opportunities

This is kind of like those who made all the money in the gold rush years. They weren't the ones digging with a pick axe, it was the guy who owned the store who sold it to those prospectors. The AI boom can work the same way.

Utah also has a growing housing market and the HVAC jobs are plentiful. A quick google search showed many opportunities paying $35 to $40 an hour. There were also opportunities for apprenticeships to learn while getting paid.

There are many questions when it comes to AI and the massive data centers needed to  make it work. For the HVAC industry, the question seems to be how we can get more people right away for the jobs that are opening up.
