The King of Helpful Bugs 

You may have seen these bugs in your garden and not realized how great they are at munching destructive critters. The green lacewing has big tear drop wings that see through. They don’t make much of an impression, but when they are young, they are voracious bad bug eaters. 

Young green lacewings will eat aphids like crazy as well as mites, caterpillars and other bothersome insects with soft underbellies. One adult female can produce 200 eggs and each one of those babies can munch hundreds of aphids in a few weeks. 

How to Attract These Lacy Garden Helpers 

Plants that attract other helpful bugs will bring in green lacewings. They will also come if there are plenty of bad bugs to eat. Pesticides can have a negative effect on their population as on all bugs. Sugar spray will also attract these beneficial insects. 

The easiest way to get these bugs in your yard is order them online. Plan now to have some eggs on hand when the aphids come out in the spring. You can put these eggs in problem spots you have had in the past.

You can also purchase larvae. At this stage, they will take out pests quickly. The adult lacewings do not eat as many pests, but they will produce more young lacewings of course, and they are good pollinators. 

When you are looking for beneficial bugs, you can’t beat the green lacewing. With a little planning now, you can have your yard and garden benefit from a healthy population.
