If you see someone working on a light pole in the middle of the night or people wandering around a construction site at odd hours, you might want to report it. With the price of metals increasing, copper thefts are becoming more common.

Copper Theft and the Impact on Local Economies

Recent arrests of two men in Utah County who had taken $12,000 in copper wire from the Union Pacific Railroad reveals theft of these metals continues to be a problem. In 2024 Salt Lake City spent $800,000 replacing stolen wire from streetlights.

These thefts affect all of us as companies and governments have to pay to replace the stolen metals. There are also higher costs for security to protect constructions sites that raise the price of homes and businesses.

Effective Strategies to Deter Thieves

The best way to battle copper thefts is a multi-prong approach. Security cameras are important along with lights that make it hard for a thief to hide. Warning signs on the property can deter people looking for an easy score.

Anything that will make it too much trouble to like fences and barbwire can keep would be thieves away. This is not practical for public utilities like streetlights and public buildings.
