The state with the most wild horses is Nevada. One of the biggest herds is on the Nevada Wild Horse Range located in a place that average humans are not allowed to go. In fact, you can’t even take pictures of it.

The Agreement with Nellis Air Force Base

In 1962 the BLM for Nevada made an agreement with Nellis to establish the land they use as a test range to have a secondary use as a home for wild horses. Since then, this herd has made their home on the test site.

Why would you put horses in a place for weapons testing? There were many people who had come to love America’s wild horses running free through the west. This was a plan to have a secondary use for the test site that would give these horses a place to roam.

How Do Wild Horses Do in the Desert?

Nevada has harsh conditions and yet the wild horse herd on the test site has thrived. These horses have adapted and can go a couple days without water if needed. The herd was supposed to be around 300 to 500 but has grown to 800.

This is not a place you can go to see these horses. It is owned by the military, and people are not allowed to enter for good reason. The area covers 1,301,637 acres used by the military to practice and test weapons.
