With August comes that back-to-school feeling. It is time to cruise the aisles for the clothes and gear to send your students back to the classroom. With the price of things and if you have multiple children heading back, you need ways to save.

As a kid, I became an expert in shopping for school. My parents wanted to teach me and my siblings how to handle money. They gave us the cash and took us to stores to buy our own clothes. As I wanted my money for lift passes for the ski season, I became an expert at finding deals.

Here’s 5 ways to save on those back-to-school items.

1. Don’t overlook the dollar stores. You can save money on paper and pencil supplies.

2. Buy in bulk. Join with other parents and do a Costco run and then split the booty.

3. Refurbished electronics. For calculators and laptops check Best Buy and Amazon. They have used items that have been restored. Just check that they have been certified and get a warranty.

4. Check around the house. You may already have many of the items in drawers as well as clothes from previous years tucked in boxes.

5. Wait to shop. Waiting a week or two after school starts may help your kids figure out what they want when they see what other students have. They may not need everything on the list and you may find better deals then.

As a side note, I may have over done the cheap shopping as a kid. My shoes often looked like they were held together by threads, but I became a really good skier.
