It isn’t a secret that manufacturers often plan for their product to break down after a certain time. It has been going on for a long time, but there are companies that buck the trend and build something that is made to last.

Purposefully Making Light Bulbs That Stop Working

In 1924 companies that manufactured lightbulbs got together in Switzerland to agree on lowering the quality of their product. They had a light bulb moment when they realized that they would make more money if people had to replace bulbs sooner.

Since then, some manufacturers have encouraged consumers to buy new products using this method. Apple purposefully slowing down their phones with required updates is just one of many examples.

Building a Product That Lasts Is Still a Thing

However, just because many products have taken this route, there are others that swim upstream. You can still find everything from frying pans to smart phones that are built to last more than a few years and even for your lifetime.

Buy Me Once is just one of several sites that test products and list those that are built to last. There is a list of bestselling items that will stand up. This is a great place to buy a gift for someone that won’t feel cheap.
