Is There An Animal You Can’t Bring With You When Shopping?
It has become popular to bring your dog into your local home improvement store. This way you don’t have to leave them in a hot car or at home feeling lonely. It also can be a way to socialize your dog and get them used to public spaces.
The Rule for Allowing Pets in Stores
All stores allow service animals thanks to the Americans with Disabilities Act. These are working animals, not pets. Their people need them to navigate public spaces and stores will not stop someone with a service dog access.
Emotional support animals or the dog you brought for fun is a different story. There are some stores that allow animals to walk or be carried through the aisles. This depends on each store’s policy and local laws.

Lowe’s, Home Depot and PetSmart are just some of the places that allow it, but you should check beforehand. These animals must be well behaved and on a leash. Your dog should be comfortable in public places before a trip to the store.
Can You Bring Other Pets Than Dogs in Stores?
There are some cats that will wear a leash, but it is not common. There’s a reason you don’t see people outside walking their cat in the evening. Same goes for turtles, gerbils and certainly goldfish. That doesn’t mean you can’t take them with you places.
There is a whole line of backpacks that are made to comfortably pack around your cat or other similar sized pet. There’s even a guy who hauls around a chicken in one of these set ups. Just don’t take this one to KFC. It could be traumatizing.

I can’t imagine dog friendly stores would have a problem with a cat zipped up in a backpack. Of course, it might get some of those leashed dogs riled up.
