Utah Wildlife Areas Now Require Free Digital Permit For Adult Visitors
New Utah WMA Access Rule: Don’t Let a Free Permit Ruin Your Outdoor Adventure
If you're the kind of person who can remember every fishing spot you've ever visited but somehow forget where you left your sunglasses, Utah has a new rule you’ll want to keep on your radar.
As of July 1, of this year, adults visiting certain Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) in Utah need either a free digital access permit or a valid Utah hunting, fishing, or combination license. The goal is simple: helping support and manage wildlife areas while keeping public access available.
Who Needs It?
Anybody age 18 or older.

That means hunters, anglers, wildlife photographers, birdwatchers, hikers, bikers, and anyone else wandering through these areas looking for fresh air and a break from their inbox. If you're an adult, heads up.
Where Does It Apply?
Right now, the requirement applies in designated Class One and Class Two counties:
- Utah County
- Salt Lake County
- Davis County
- Weber County
For Southern Utah residents, that may sound far away, but plenty of outdoor enthusiasts travel statewide throughout the year. One weekend road trip could put you in permit territory.
What Counts as Access?
The good news? The digital access permit is free.
You can qualify by obtaining the permit after watching the required educational video, or by carrying a valid Utah hunting, fishing, or combination license.
The Bottom Line
Nothing kills an outdoor adventure faster than discovering you missed a rule change.
Before heading to a WMA, take a minute to make sure you're covered. It's free, it's easy, and it's a lot cheaper than explaining to your buddies why the trip started with a citation instead of a campfire story.
