Is Utah Really Mourning The Drive-in Movie?
The Drive-In Movie Theater
I heft the 4 plus pound speaker to the car window hoping its big metal hook won't crack the glass, turn up the spotty sound with some WW2 era knob and sit back to watch a movie wishing I had washed the windshield better. The drive-in movie, whatever happened to them?
Land Shift Dooms the Drive-In
Once a symbol of mid-century Americana, drive-in movie theaters have largely vanished from the national landscape. While nostalgia often blames streaming or changing tastes, the real culprit is more grounded: real estate. This article dives deep into the elements that doomed the drive-in, but one thing is clear as land values soared, especially in urban and suburban areas, the sprawling lots required for drive-ins became prime targets for redevelopment.
Many theaters were sold off to make way for housing, retail, they were evicted by bulldozers and beige condos.
Utah and Drive-In Movies
But in Utah, the demise of the drive-in was much less painful than many other states. Why? Because Utah never had that many to begin with. At its peak, the state hosted around 30 drive-ins—a modest number compared to other states. Today, only four remain, with two clustered near Salt Lake City. The Basin Drive-in in Mount Pleasant, for example, still operates seasonally with a cozy 200-car capacity, more a community gem than a commercial juggernaut.
Less Fall-Out
Utah’s sparse drive-in footprint meant fewer closures, less economic fallout, and minimal cultural whiplash. Utah seems to often have it's eye on the future so as new technologies hit the shelves Utah seemed quick to gravitate to VCR and home theaters and while other regions mourned the loss of summer rituals, Utahns largely shrugged and moved on.
