St. George Airport Adding Escalators to New Gates Is Next Level
If you have experienced the convenience of flying out of the St. George airport you are not alone. Because of the increased demand, Washington County is looking to expand the airport with some new features never seen before in Southern Utah.
Expansion Plans Unveiled Reveal New Levels of Growth
The current plan is to expand the airport to have seven gates with an expanded baggage area. This will include a new terminal with four gates in a second level area along with the three gates that are currently available at ground level.
The expansion will also include new space for restaurants and food vendors. The big news, there will also be elevators and escalators to move passengers around. You can see the developing plan on the St. George City site.
A Gateway to Modern Amenities
If you were a kid growing up in Southern Utah and you wanted to experience the magic of a moving sidewalk or the wonder of riding an escalator, it meant traveling to Las Vegas or Salt Lake. It was a big city thing.
With the airport expansion, Southern Utah hits a new people moving benchmark. This may seem like a small thing, but many cities note their growth by the first stoplight, a multiplex movie theatre, or big enough for a Costco. I include the first escalator to the list.

To pay for the expansion of the airport and the Dixie Center, the county plans to authorize $50 million in revenue bonds. There will be a public hearing about it on September 15, 2026 at the County Commission building 111 E Tabernacle at 4pm.
