Watermelon of the Past

“Put the watermelon in the river and it’ll be nice and chilled for lunch,” said my, uncles and cousins at every function circa 1995. Back then, watermelons were the size of toddlers and came with enough seeds to start your own farm. One melon fed the whole family—with leftovers for farm animals.

If you have been avoiding the weeklong commitment of a watermelon because your family isn't big enough it's time to rethink this refreshing summer treat.

Watermelon Size Options

Fast forward to 2025, and watermelon sizing has gone boutique. Icebox melons? Personal-sized? Cannonball? Suddenly, buying a watermelon feels like choosing a battery, they come in so many shapes and sizes. You have the flexibility to have a little one meal 2 people version all the way to the monster block party versions that require a small truck to haul.

Watermelon Options

Seedless, seed full, super sweet, yellow-fleshed, watermelons come in so many varieties that the apple cart is starting to feel a little underrepresented. I just noticed the elusive high-end Belmont—watermelon this one has gone full diva. There are over 1,200 varieties worldwide, and Southern Utah seems to be hoarding the good stuff. No seeds? No problem. Just pure juicy joy without the spit zone, a downer for those of us who used to enjoy a seed-spitting contests.

Watermelon Season

If you’re going to dive in, now’s the time. Watermelon season in Utah peaks from September to mid-October, but the sweet spot starts earlier—June through August is prime time for flavor. So yes, it’s hot, but so is your melon game.

Whether you’re floating one down the river or slicing a mini melon for your solo picnic, Southern Utah’s watermelon scene is bursting with options.
