Is The Sun To Blame For Utahn Recent Drowsiness?
A few weeks ago I noted that a lot of people were feeling sleepy lately, I mean I personally have been hitting the snooze button like it's a competitive sport. We considered different possible causes including Utah and Nevada weather whiplash of the fall and how that can disrupt our circadian rhythm, how the dry winds and shortening of days can manifest as fatigue, but this recent development might give us more plausible insight.
The Sun is Waking Up
I don't mean to crank up cosmic paranoia, but according to recent reports, the sun is acting up—flaring more frequently, emitting bursts of energy, and generally behaving like it just downed a triple espresso. NASA’s scratching its head, and so are we.
Because if the sun’s waking up early, maybe it’s dragging Southern Utah's sleep cycles into its chaotic morning routine.
The Suns Affect On Us
Think about it: solar flares disrupting magnetic fields, cosmic rays tickling our melatonin levels, and the sun itself radiating “rise and shine” energy like an overzealous life coach. Especially in Southern Utah where the sun is such a part of life.

Is it possible that our collective drowsiness is actually a side effect of the sun’s own insomnia?
Sun Activity Affecting Our Dreams
There is some research that shows our nighttime alertness can be affected by the cosmos. So, if you’ve been feeling like your dreams are getting manipulated by a less quiet, giant glowing alarm clock in the sky, you’re not alone. Maybe the sun’s just trying to vibe with us here in the desert. Or maybe it’s broadcasting a universal “get up and do something” signal—and we are responding with “how about a nap instead?”
Either way, next time you hit snooze, just tell your boss it’s solar interference. Sounds way cooler than “I stayed up watching reruns.”
