I'm a fan of the creativity some put into their "vanity plates".  Some are really clever and others take you a minute to work out what they're saying.  On rare occasions, there will be one you can't quite get.  But with about 7 characters to work with, some people do some genius work crafting their personalized license plate.  I did some digging through stories from here in Utah and even found a few from Car & Driver magazine that were rejected.

It's a good thing I'm not the person at DMV in charge of what gets through or not because I would allow a lot of these.  Naughty got rejected.  Naughty was a term for little kids who act up.  It's the adults that made it bad.  Spoiled made me laugh.  My wife would have loved that as her plate.

Kinky was rejected. Perhaps that's not about my hair.

Gaspain was kicked.  I think the request was even more hidden, like G4SPAIN but DMV said no.  You can picture them filling out the form.  "They'll think it's something about SPAIN if we use G4Spain. But G4SPAIN didn't make it. Even with gas prices like these?!!!

They stopped short of going all the way spelling it out but the license peeps said, no.

You and I might think if Top^Off as something for a convertible or filling your gas tank all the way.  It got a no.

Slow and Funny?  Hmm.  Slow Anderson Family?  No?

This one took me a minute to get.  I guess when you read it out loud...

Somehow this was turned down.

There are no bad words in any of these, so if I make the leap to something bad, isn't that on ME?

What's in the trunk?

Hustle isn't bad, is it?  Pete Rose is still called Charlie Hustle.  That's "Trying hard", isn't it?

How cool would that be on your getaway car? Your license number is HEIST?!!!

It's a snack.  If you went there, that's on you.

I wonder if this one could have made it through years ago before the term got to be common.

Car and Drive said this was turned down.  It was on a Jeep Wrangler.  What's wrong with Lil Bo Geep?  Did I miss something? Did you know that GP was an army term for General Purpose vehicle and that became "Jeep"?

My brother had a '71 Mustang Mach I when he was in high school.  Giddy Up '71 is excellent!  Who kicked that?

Ok, you made it icky when you added EWWWWWW.

Girl Boss should have been OK.  I've had a lot of female bosses and each one of them would have paid big money to have a plate like that.  And they had the money.  They were the Girl Boss!

Whiskey would be a cool plate.  I wouldn't recommend it because you will get pulled over EVERY TIME you leave the driveway but wow, that would be cool.

Trippin' is bad?  It could be about travel.  It's not necessarily a drug term.  I think part of the application process in some states is a box where you explain your request.

Dope was never a term that caught on in my head to replace "cool" but for some, "Dope" is it!  So why is TooDope bad?  I guess the drug reference makes it bad.

Snax is bad?  Maybe it means something else that I don't know about but I would think that was OK.  You?  (Right now, there is someone laughing out loud saying, "You don't know what SNAX means?")

I think Sh8knBk is an odd way of spelling out Shake N Bake.  That's a basket ball or football term.  Or to some, it's still a method of preparing chicken or pork chops. Why does Shake N Bake get kicked?

Someone is as toxic as Fred.

Another term that may be lost on me.  Is a 3 putt a common term outside of golf?

attachment-23

XTC is a fun way of spelling Ecstasy.  Overwhelming feeling of happiness or joy.  Not necessarily a drug reference.

Come on.  Who doesn't like a good Mojito?  My wife and her girlfriends go nuts for these when doing a Saturday morning brunch.  Even her mom, my MOTHER-IN-LAW and her girls had Mojitos at "card club".

I would have been the coolest kid in my school if my Pontiac GTO had MOONSHINE on the license plate.  Actually, that's not true.  I would have still been just another weird kid, ...with a COOL LICENSE PLATE!

DMV frowns on any kind of booze and drug terms. But wine is pretty tame, isn't it?

attachment-18

People use Tushi as a backside term with little kids.  But I guess body parts draw a frown too.

This lady just parked next to your husband.  Does her MSTR3SS plate make you wonder?

Another plate that would have been cool in high school but it never made it out of the print shop.

You KNOW you saw a rejected plate in here that you are going to try yourself with just a slight variation or it sparked an idea for something even better.  Maybe yours will make it.  Are license plates still made in prisons or is that just a story from decades ago?  For those of you who get your 7 character combination past the panel at DMV, we all applaud your effort.  For those of you who push the limits, we'll be watching for your next attempt.  'Hope you win getting a fun one through the process.
