New Bone Glue May Make Setting Bones a Thing of the Past in Utah
Glue made from oysters has been around for a while, but this new version out of China could have some big implications. It could make setting broken bones in a cast seem barbaric like using leeches to drain blood.
Chinese Research Refines Glue from Oysters for Medical Use
Oysters use a chemical to secure themselves to structures under water. This ability to firmly attach to metal objects in the ocean inspired researchers to isolate the chemical and develop a glue that can work inside the body.
The Chinese scientist developed a glue specifically to firmly bond bones back together in just minutes. The bone glue can be applied inside the body without clearing blood and other fluids.
This is a huge breakthrough in treating bone fractures as it requires far less surgery. No longer will a surgeon need to open up the wound but can make a small incision and repair the break without the need for screws or steel plates.
Repairing Bones with This Glue Speeds Up Recovery Time
With the bone quickly repaired it cuts down on the surgery time and the danger of infection. Even better, as the bone heals, the body naturally absorbs the glue and there is no need for a second surgery to remove screws and plates.

This has far reaching potential and somewhere horses are cheering. There was a time when you would need to put a horse down if it broke a leg because they were so large that when the bone broke it was fatal. With bone glue, this could all change.
