This year, Halloween is on a Friday. This will make most families happy who don't have to worry about getting kids to school the next day. It also might make you wonder why we don't do it on the weekend every year.

Could Everyone Agree on the Last Saturday in October?

There have been proponents over the years who have argued that Halloween should be moved from the 31st to the last Saturday in October. It is basically a time and safety issue as everyone would be off with less traffic and no next day school.

I like the idea and since Halloween isn’t a government sanctioned holiday, we could do this anytime by just getting together and deciding to offer candy at the door on Saturday. This probably won’t happen because we would all have to agree on it. There is a better solution anyway.

Extended Halloween Weekend

Everyone loves a long holiday weekend, and it is past time for Halloween to fit the bill. We shouldn’t move Halloween to Saturday, we should put it on Friday like it is this year. Suddenly we are looking at a new three day weekend.

Even better, do it like Thanksgiving and put it on Thursday and we get four days.

To really make this happen, we will need the government to make it a Federal Holiday. That way we don’t have to get together and have everyone go along. With it as a government deal, businesses will close, and we all go home and don a costume.

There are always politicians hoping to pander to the people to get votes and what’s better than telling people they have a new extended weekend. It is all lining up. Maybe if Utah leads the way we can get the rest of the nation to go along.

Stacker compiled a list of ways that Halloween has changed over the last 100 years, from how we celebrate it on the day to the costumes we wear trick-or-treating. We’ve included events, inventions, and trends that changed the ways that Halloween was celebrated over time. Many of these traditions were phased out over time. But just like fake blood in a carpet, every bit of Halloween’s history left an impression we can see traces of today.
