There is a part of the brain that is sensitive to light and sits between the two hemispheres. It is the pineal gland and it helps regulate sleep. With its sensitivity to light, people of the past believed it was the source of enlightenment.

This small part of the brain sits right behind the forehead and between the eyebrows. It secretes melatonin that is a hormone helps regulate sleep and wakefulness. It is sensitive to light from the eyes that helps for the timing of the melatonin release.

When this small pine cone shaped gland is disrupted, it can effect sleep patterns and psychological functions. The body's circadian rhythms are get messed up with the lack of melatonin.

Hinduism, Buddhism and Higher Consciousness

The pineal gland has been called the "third eye" by some of the eastern religions for the belief that it can increase enlightenment. Through meditation they feel they can open this pathway and be able to see more.

The pineal gland plays an important role in the body. Certain chemicals and metals can effect this part of the brain. Fluoride can cause calcification in the pineal gland. This slows down its functions and it begins to release less melatonin.

Aluminum is most foods and it can end up in the brain as well but especially the pineal gland. Its not clear how the metal effects this part of the brain. Coffee and tea have some of the highest levels of aluminum as do processed foods.

Scientists are still working to understand all the functions of the pineal gland and its importance to the rest of the body. Because of the high blood flow through it, fluoride and aluminum end up in this important part of the brain and can cause it to malfunction.
