You Have A WHAT In Your Pool?!?!

Utah is no stranger to wild animal encounters and since its summer, you can expect to see more wild creatures cross your path.  

If you have a pool, you’re even more likely to encounter some wildlife way out of its element. With all the outdoor BBQs and delicious smells, it's no wonder a skunk or raccoon will make their way down to investigate. While they are at it why not cool off with a drink and swim from the pool?  

This leads to animal drownings, a shock for you, and a completely preventable scenario.  

The Humane Society of the United States said that baby animals like chipmunks, birds, lizards, and mice are most susceptible to pool drownings.  

Ways To Help Wild Animals in The Pool 

• The HSUS recommends designing your pool with lounge ledges to help anything that might fall in get out. However, this won’t work for smaller creatures and babies.  
• Fence off your pool. 
• Add water exits like the Froglog to allow for an escape that floats near the pool's edge.  
• Attach nylon ropes at the edge with a knot at the water’s surface to allow wildlife to climb out. 
• Use a pool cover. 

Rescue That Squirrel!

If you do come out to find an animal in your pool, there are a few things you can do. If the animal is smaller grab your pool net and scoop them up. If you don’t have one the bristled end of a broom should work too.  

For larger wildlife, try to set up a makeshift ramp that will allow the animal to get out. Make sure to keep a safe distance to avoid getting bit or clawed. If you can, call your local emergency wildlife rescue for help.  

If you want to have wildlife in your backyard, you can provide a wildlife pond to invite the critters to a safe place to gather food and water. You may see some pretty cool creatures!
