Discover these Hidden Gems: Seven Sites Unique to Southern Utah

Many sites are unique to Utah, several of which are in Southern Utah. With the help of Atlas Obscura, I’ve made a list of six sites unique to Southern Utah. I will have a piece specific to Cedar City and St. George coming up soon. 

Four Corners National Monument: Located in Teec Nos Pos, Utah, the monument marks where the points of New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, and Utah meet. According to Atlas Obscura, "It’s a rare geographical occurrence and is the only one of its kind in the United States." 

Moqui Cave: Located near Kanab, Utah, the cave houses Native American artifacts, fossils, and one of the largest collections of fluorescent minerals in the United States. 

Upheaval Dome: Located near Moab, Utah, according to Atlas Obscura “The theory is that the current Upheaval Dome is an impact crater that has been modified considerably from its original form.  Around 60 million years ago, scientists argue, a meteorite hit the site and created only a partially collapsed crater. Over time, the crater crumbled and underground rocks rose to fill in the gaps, exposing the impact crater’s deep core.” 

Goblin Valley State Park: Located near Green River, Utah, the area was made a state park in 1964. Wind and water have eroded the sandstone rocks, making up the hoodoos up to fifty feet tall. 

Buckhorn Wash Pictograph Panel: Also located near Green River, Utah, the panel is one of many canyons and gorges that contain prehistoric art. The panel is thought to have been created by hunter-gatherers 1,500 to 4,000 years ago. 

Forrest Gump Point: Located near Halchita, Utah, if you've seen the 1994 film, then this is a familiar site. This is where the character played by Tom Hanks decided it was time to go home.

The Narrows: Zion National Park was established in 1919 and within it are The Narrows. You'll want to check the weather and with the park for flash flood warnings before planning to hike The Narrows.
