When going to small towns in Utah, speeding is a dangerous game because of their reputation.

When I first moved to Southern Utah, I had heard places like Ivins and Santa Clara were filled with police officers who sat around just looking for people going over the speed limit. Now, that is totally not true, but I heard it several times during the first few years I lived here.

Well, Southern Utah isn’t the only place where small towns have a reputation for catching speed demons at a high rate.

Northern Utah has plenty of small Utah towns that do actually make some money off traffic fines. This is most likely due to population size and limited tourism.

A Utah law prevents any municipality from generating over 25% of their revenue from traffic fines. Those small Utah towns have stayed well under this number shown in the audit conducted by the Office of the Utah State Auditor.

Though this is only the second year of the audit, several of the towns that do get a higher percentage of revenue from traffic fines, are still rather “low”.

Utah Towns That Make the Most Money from Traffic Fines

  • Sunset City (14.9%)
  • Mantua City (13%)
  • Wellsville City (12.1%)
  • Orderville Town (10.4%)
  • Willard City (10.1%)

None of these come close to Utah’s cap of 25% of revenue generated from traffic fines. Still, speeding in Sunset City or Mantua City is not a smart move. There is a much higher chance you’ll get caught by local police.
