Southern Utah Schools Prove Academic Excellence Thrives Beyond The Wasatch Front
Southern Utah has a few reasons to be proud when it comes to the latest rankings of the state’s best high schools.
The 2026-27 Best High Schools rankings from U.S. News & World Report put Crimson Cliffs High School among Utah’s academic standouts showing up at number 10 on the list, giving the Washington County school one of the highest positions in the state. The ranking is particularly noteworthy because the schools at the top of the Utah list are heavily concentrated along the Wasatch Front and in northern Utah.
Crimson Cliffs is part of a growing Washington County education landscape that includes several schools serving the rapidly expanding St. George area. Desert Hills, Snow Canyon, Pine View, Dixie and Hurricane high schools also give the area a substantial presence in the statewide discussion of academic performance.
College Prep, Curriculum, Grad Rates Among Factors
The U.S. News rankings are based on considerably more than a school's reputation or a single test score. The national organization evaluated nearly 18,000 public high schools for the 2026-27 rankings, using factors including college readiness, curriculum breadth, state assessment proficiency and performance, graduation rates and how well schools serve underserved students.
That methodology makes another Cedar City school particularly interesting: SUU SUCCESS Academy.
The early-college high school, located on the Southern Utah University campus, offers students an opportunity to combine high school and college coursework in a setting designed to prepare them for higher education. SUCCESS describes itself as a high school on a college campus, with smaller classes, tutoring, counseling and hands-on learning opportunities.
Although SUCCESS should not be confused with a U.S. News statewide ranking, the school performs impressively in other independent evaluations. Niche currently ranks SUU SUCCESS Academy No. 7 among Utah's best public high schools, while Public School Review also places SUCCESS among Utah's highest-ranked public high schools based largely on student proficiency.

For families in Iron County and throughout Southern Utah, that provides an encouraging picture. The region may not have the sheer concentration of highly ranked schools found along the Wasatch Front, but schools from Cedar City to St. George are demonstrating that strong academic performance isn't limited to Utah's larger population centers.
And perhaps that's the biggest takeaway from the latest rankings: Southern Utah may be growing rapidly, but its high schools are growing academically right along with it.
