A Tribute To Those Who Display Faith

The argument is being made these days that people of faith are under a type of social attack from the media, pop culture, and the intellectually advanced. I'm not here to advance that argument per se, but I do appreciate those who willingly in the public square not back down from their display of beliefs that are the foundation on which they stand.

That's why I found this article form Kurt Mahlburg so interesting. Like Mr. Mahlburg, Ash Wednesday is not a particular part of my faith tradition. I do find value, however, in learning about it and have respect for those who do incorporate the rituals of Ash Wednesday in their lives.

Ash Wednesday holds significant importance within the Christian calendar, marking the beginning of Lent—a period of reflection, repentance, and preparation for Easter. This solemn day, observed by millions worldwide, carries profound spiritual symbolism and serves as a reminder of human mortality and the need for repentance.

First and foremost, Ash Wednesday symbolizes humility and mortality. The ashes, typically made from burnt palm branches blessed on the previous year's Palm Sunday, are imposed on the foreheads of believers in the shape of a cross. This act serves as a tangible reminder of the biblical passage, "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return" (Genesis 3:19). The ash cross serves as a visible sign of our mortality, urging individuals to contemplate the brevity of life and the importance of living in accordance with faith.

As I have made my way into the late fall or early winter stages of my life, coupled with some of the health issues I have been dealing with, the limited nature of mortality has become very much impressed in my mind set. Moreover, being in this stage of life has really caused me to contemplate what I can do better, and what things I need to cast aside that are a hindrance to my progress on a spiritual basis.

Ash Wednesday initiates the season of Lent—a period of forty days (excluding Sundays) dedicated to prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. It provides an opportunity for believers to engage in spiritual introspection, identifying areas of personal growth and repentance. Through acts of self-denial and reflection, individuals seek to deepen their relationship with God and align their lives more closely with Christian principles.

Additionally, Ash Wednesday serves as a call to renewal and transformation. As believers receive the ashes, they are reminded of the invitation to turn away from sin and embrace the Gospel message. The Lenten journey offers a pathway towards spiritual renewal, inviting individuals to let go of past mistakes and embrace a life of virtue, compassion, and service.

Furthermore, Ash Wednesday fosters a sense of community and solidarity among believers. As individuals gather to receive the ashes, they stand united in their commitment to faith and repentance. The communal observance of Ash Wednesday reinforces the shared journey of faith, encouraging mutual support and accountability as believers strive to live out their convictions in the world.

As I mentioned, the tradition of placing ashes on my forehead in the symbol of a cross is not part of the faith path I walk, although, if someone offered to do that to me I wouldn't stop them.
