Skeletons Discovered in Southern Utah

Back in 1999 some teenagers were hiking on the side of Webb Hill, the hill across the Virgin River South of St. George with all the radio towers. They came to a small cave and discovered a human skeleton inside. The skull showed signs of trauma.

Through some forensic work, it was determined by one of the buttons on his shirt that it was a boy that lived around 1918. Some older residents remembered the story of a kid who had been mauled by a dog. He had a hard time fitting in after that and one day wandered off and was never seen again.

There haven’t been any more clues on this story, but it does bring up the question of what you should you do if you discover human remains.

I know a family who found the bones of an ancient Native American when they were digging their foundation for their home. They were afraid things would be delayed by the find.

What To Do When a Skeleton is Found

Here’s what Utah law says about finding human remains. You will be guilty if you don’t report it, if you move or try to conceal it, or destroy any part of it. It goes on to describe many other disturbing things you could do to the body which you never wanted to think about and will, for good reason, get you in trouble.

The Utah Historical Society advises calling the authorities should you find human remains on public or private land. They give all the contact information for relevant agencies. They also point out that you may not know if the bones are human or animal.

In the case of identification, taking a picture of the exposed remains and sending them to an expert can solve the problem. They say human bones are more porous and have more spongy material.

Yuck. I’m probably not checking for any of that.
