What is considered art is often in the eye of the beholder. In the desert outside of Las Vegas where there was once an old train station, there is a what looks like a giant beer can laying in the sand. What do you think, is this art or litter?

Old Train Station Provided Water for Passing Trains

About 25 miles out of Las Vegas near Moapa there was a train station that provided water for steam engines. All that is left are some foundations, a tin building, and a large metal tank lying on the ground.

In 2015, someone came along and painted the metal tank to look like a beer can. They don’t give any explanation for why they did it. In the video he shows how it was all painted late at night.

It might be like the “Banksy” art pieces done in England where they just show up in public places. The beer can painting was posted by a channel named “Indecline” that has 21.8k subscribers and a few videos.

What Makes Something Art?

What people find meaningful in an artist’s creation is subjective. Painting an abandoned tank into a what looks like a beer can is kind of cool. It looks like a roadside attraction you would see on Route 66.

However, if you have walked around in the desert for any length of time, you have seen beer cans that look just like this in the dirt. Does seeing a giant representation of litter give some kind of meaning? Do we need litter represented when it is everywhere?

The can looks like Pabst Blue Ribbon can but it says “Claim Your Destiny” on the blue ribbon. What do you think the artist meant by this? Maybe he is saying that if you don’t seek some direction, you will end up like an old beer can rusting in the desert.
