The Inspiration

I recently read an article about closet organization — the kind that gently shames you into believing your entire life would improve if you just bought better hangers.

Naturally, I was intrigued.
Naturally, I owned zero of them.

I was this close to buying some, but then I remembered: we already have enough hangers to supply a small department store. Buying more felt like adopting another dog when you’re still trying to rehome the first three.

A young neighbor called and asked if I could help him organize his stuff for an upcoming move. So I head over, expecting to sort through the usual moving‑day chaos: mismatched socks, mystery cables, and at least one box labeled “kitchen?” with a basketball inside.

But as we’re working, he hands me an overstuffed bag of felt hangers. FELT HANGERS. The exact thing I had been debating buying. He shrugs and says his mom keeps giving them to him, but he prefers the thick plastic ones. Then he asks if I want them.

Here are the rules that I think allow luck to sneak in the door:

1. Serendipity loves motion

Somehow movement seems to help the luck flow, Serendipity seems to show up when you’re active, useful, or connected.

2. Openness beats control

Don't force the moment. Over‑planning, frustration or plotting seem to get in the way. Simply stay open — openness seems to be key.

3. Generosity circulates

Life seems to run on a quiet barter system of kindness. The more you give, the more it gives back.

4. Small miracles count

People think luck has to be dramatic — lottery tickets, dream jobs, lightning‑bolt moments. But most luck looks like this: a need you barely voiced being met in a way you never expected.
