The United States Government under the Biden Administration has had their eye on appliances to try to up the efficiency to save energy. By tightening up the regulations on these appliances, the government claims it will save billions of dollars every year. They have tightened the Department of Energy standards on several appliances claiming it will save individuals and families money on their electric bill.

This is only one side of the story. Critics claim the standards are unrealistic and end up hurting those most vulnerable. They say the heavy regulations will cause a spike in prices, leaving many people unable to afford the new appliances. They also say the cost of turning over all these appliances is hard on natural resources as well.

Not that long ago, when it was announced the Administration was going after gas stoves, the reaction was of disbelief, and many said it was untrue. However, that is what has happened. Gas stoves have come under tighter regulations and New York has passed laws to stop the sale of gas stoves all together.

Besides gas stoves, the administration has tightened regulations on washing machines, refrigerators, air conditioners and dishwashers. These changes are scheduled to be implemented in the next 3-6 years. This will cause an increase in manufacturing costs that will be passed on to the consumer.

The latest appliance to have new energy standards applied is the water heater. Once again, the government is claiming billions in savings, but the impact on the average consumer is not factored in. I think we can all agree that saving energy is a good thing, unless it means we save because many people can’t afford one. Especially if they are those most in need.
