“Please by kind to your substitute teacher”, that was what the students in class heard this morning. There seems to be another wave of flu-like symptoms spreading through our area and the regular teacher of this class had been prey to the latest round.

One of the ways to avoid getting sick is to keep your defenses high. There are as many strategies as there are potential victims to keeping your immunity strong. Here is one that might be overlooked, avoid getting stressed. Meditating can be a powerful tool to combat stress and what’s more according to Joseph Arangio, you can do it while you are shopping.

Shopping usually stresses me out more, so how do you do it?

Stay Present – Notice the colors of the many products, the design of the product placement, the faces of fellow shoppers. Breathe deep and be shopping while your shopping, not mentally fighting the traffic trying to get home before your ice cream melts.

Enjoy the Routine – Let your regular walk through become a comforting routine.
Following your mapped out course can bring the calm of a routine. Breathe deeply and conscientiously letting the routine of your shop slow you down mentally. You can even try to enjoy rhythm of your cart, unless that wobbly wheel is too irritating, then maybe let it tutor you in patience as you try to breathe through the syncopated beat of your one-man band.

Enjoy Different Textures – Packaging offers such a variety of textures as you shop. Let you fingers enjoy the smoothness of the mayo bottle and the crunchy snap of a chip bag as you put them in the cart. Maybe avoid touching fellow shoppers even if they are wearing a sweater rich with texture.

Do Aroma Therapy – Let your nose in on the fun. I remember my mom taking a big sniff when we entered the produce section and exclaiming that it smelt fresh. Try to identify sent signatures in different parts of the store. Be discreet and cautious there are some scents you have gone nose blind to on purpose.
