This flu season in Utah and Nevada is hitting harder than in previous years. According to the latest reports from Utah's epidemiology department, we're seeing an unprecedented surge in Influenza A cases.

It's not just numbers; it's personal. Many of us have dealt with flu symptoms or had the full-blown illness. Just last week, a teacher reported that in her morning class of 32 students, 17 were out sick.

In Nevada, I have had friends tell me similar stories. The Southern Nevada Health District data shows positive influenza tests almost twice the national average according to the Southern Nevada Weekly Influenza report. This could lead to a longer wait in emergency rooms, a stark contrast to the typical flu season.

This year's outbreak seems to be driven by a combination of factors.

Factor 1: The CDC reports this season could be one of the worst in 28 years, with an estimated 24 million illnesses across the U.S. So saturation could be driving more cases in our area along with the rest of the country.

Factor 2: Here in Utah and Nevada, the low vaccination rates compared to previous years might be playing a role.

Could the relaxation of mask mandates and social distancing be a factor in the spread? That remains debatable, but one thing is certain—it appears significantly worse than in past years. As far as the mask mandate goes there is nothing quite like the sight of someone cruising solo in a Prius, proudly sporting their handcrafted mask. I mean we might have left the land of logic for a while there.
