There are artifacts lying in the dirt all around Utah from early people who lived and hunted in the mountains and valleys. Here’s how and where to find arrowheads while you’re out enjoying the fresh air.

The Common Weapon of Former Inhabitants

People in the past were making sharp points from obsidian and other sharp rocks in a process called knapping. They spent much of their free time scraping out arrowheads that was a skill developed over years of working with the rock.

How the arrowhead was made can tell you a lot about what people it belonged to. These points were used in hunting and fighting with other groups in the long history of the American continent.

Where to Find Arrowheads in Utah

The first thing you need to do to find an arrowhead is to train your eye to see them. Anything that reflects the light or looks different from other rocks might be worth inspecting closer.

These people were constantly working on new points, and they did this after preparing a campsite when they were out hunting. Look in places that would make a good place to camp near water. This would be a stream or spring with a flat area nearby.

Another good place is where someone would take cover in a storm. Shallow caves or an overhang would provide cover, and there are often ancient artifacts left in the dirt beneath. You can also find arrowheads where dirt is exposed in a field or along a trail.

Finding one of these ancient treasures can be exhilarating when you are out hiking around. With a little research, you can figure out when it was made and what native people came through there.
