Yeah, I Do Slot Canyons…Easy Hike Near Leeds
It's time you experienced a slot canyon in Southern Utah.
If you have lived in this area and have not seen a slot canyon, here's an easy one that is close to St. George and will give you the experience. There are hundreds of places where water has carved a canyon from the sandstone. Some are aggressive even multi-day hikes, too much for the average weekend warrior.
The Red Reef Trail or often referred to as Rec Cliffs is a moderate trail takes about an hour and leads into a slot canyon where there are large pools of water. It's a moderate hike and you can take your kids and pets along as well.
How To Get There:
Take the Leeds exit off I-15 and follow the frontage road to Harrisburg. Here you will find a road that goes under the freeway. It's a narrow fit that takes you around to the red cliffs campground. There is a $5 entry fee per car and you will find information on the trail and the hike.
No permit is required for this hike. Bring plenty of water and shoes that you can get wet. In the spring and early summer there is water in the canyon so check the weather before heading out. There are bathrooms at the campground so no need to worry about when you've got to go. It's a couple miles to the lower pools and the hike is pretty easy.
This is a good representation of the red rock and it's slot canyons in Southern Utah. Take a early morning hike into the canyon and you'll feel yourself becoming a part of this desert landscape.
