Worth It? Sitting in Crammed Gas Lines at Utah Costco
I have friends that roll their eyes every time they drive past Costco and see the vehicles lined up five deep at the pump. They cannot understand why anyone would waste their time to save a little on gas.
How Much are You Saving and is it Worth It?
Here’s a loosely crunched look at the numbers. If the price of gas at Costco is $2.99 and if your car gets between 20 to 26 miles per gallon, you will burn through $1 dollar of gas in about 8 miles. That will vary of course on the mileage and gas price.
If it will cost .08 more to fill up somewhere other than Costco and if you have to drive more than 10 miles out of your way to get to get there, filling up a 16-gallon tank, you are almost breaking even.
At .15 you are saving a dollar or so, but this may not be worth your time. That savings goes up if you stop at a station near a freeway off ramp where its .29 more. Over the life of your car, this could save some dollars.
Now if Costco is on your way, that small amount of money starts to add up over a year. And if you go early in the morning or later in the evening there isn’t a line. This starts to make more sense.
Head to the Corner of Southern Utah if you Really Want to Save on Gas
If you want that heady feeling of getting the lowest price on gas, it is hard to beat the Shivwits Convenience Store in Shivwits, Utah. This is just past Ivins on the reservation. This is usually a good ten cents lower than even Costco. Now that is some savings.

It may not make sense if you live in Ogden, but if you are making your way from there to Las Vegas, a trip down the back side of the gorge with a stop at the convenience store is worth it. With what you will save, it will pay for your beef jerky.
