Dave recently wrote an article about the Old Spanish Trail going from Southern California to Florida. A little fact checking revealed that some clever folks “extended” the Old Spanish Trail by naming a road from coast to coast by the same name of the famous Dominquez-Escalante trail.

It got me wondering what other “facts” that are commonly accepted that might be in error. I set this article up in the style of a quiz. You will find the answers in the article, but if you read slowly you can offer your answer before you see the explanation. Here we go.

No. Two Canadians, Henry Woodward and Mathew Evans filed a patent in 1874 for the lightbulb before they had to abandon their progress because of a lack of funding. Thomas Edison acquired the famous patent in 1879 for $5,000, this actually caused a legal battle after the patent office ruled that he was not the inventor.

Were Salem witches slain when found guilty of witchcraft?

Yes. Witches found guilty were condemned to death in Salem, but none of them were burned at the stake. That was more prominent in England. One man who refused to incriminate himself died beneath heavy stones.

Did Brigham Young say “This is the place” when he entered the valley?

Yes or No?

Technically No. For one his words were not recorded by him so he might have said it a bit differently, but the records state that he said, “This is the right place, drive on”. It’s a bit like how Darth Vader did not say, “Luke I am your father” the way we always quote it. For bonus nerd points what did he actually say?

Your are correct, it was “Luke I am your aunt's sister on your father's side two times removed”. Just kidding, he actually responded to Luke's accusation by saying, ““No, I am your father”.
