Utah baby names have often been the source for a bit of a chuckle for people because Utah parents sometimes wax a little poetic and sometimes, they are straight-out inventive. However recent research suggests that Utah parents are actually trendsetters in baby naming. 

Utah parents (I'm talking to you Brody and Brenda) seem to dare to venture into uncharted territory, which is where the teasing has some merit, but they seem to set trends with their creativity. The research was able to track Utah-specific names and found that not only were they new to the baby name pool, but after a few years, these new names started to pop up in different parts of the United States.  

Often unique names were trackable as a Utah original, like "Taeg", and after a few years, the name started popping up in neighboring states and then was seen through different parts of the country. So, just hang on Macady, soon you won’t stand out as the only one in your class. 

The research was also able to find a preference for names in Utah to be ahead of the curve. Pay attention now Madison, McCormick, and Cameron. Sometimes a traditional, yet unused name pops up in popularity in Utah and with time baby name lists around the country start including it.    

How do Utah parents do it? The research points out that name giving is serious business in Utah. The tradition that a name can help the child have confidence, purpose, or a desire to play a multi-million dollar sport is a cause for serious thought which might create fertile ground for Utah’s naming skills. No pressure Jordeynn and Tygur. 

So next time you want to make fun of Breylin, Jaxley, or Mackailuh maybe you should consider how this name might become more popular in the future. Think about it, do you really want to offend a large group of Rokyts that will remember that you once mocked their name?
