Utah Is Hyped About Blue Light Filtering. Is It Too Much?
Is Utah's love of the blue light filtering going to save their eyes from eye strain?
Utah is obsessed with blue filtering. Everyone I know either has blue light filtering glasses or has set their device to look like an old western weathered wanted poster after sunset. So, it's time to ask Utah, does blue filtering actually help you sleep better, reduce eye strain, improve eyesight, or help you see the future?
In short eye professionals say no.
Animal Testing
Doctors note that many of the tests are done on animals and it is not conclusive if eye strain is reduced by blocking blue light. I know often animal testing is preferred, but in the eye strain tests it seems odd that animals are used, it's not like eye strain is deadly or most of the world hasn't experienced it.
Cause of Eye Fatigue
Dr. See noted that many of the tests are inconclusive, and that it is unclear why being on our devices is taxing to the eyes. Just as an aside, how great is it that Dr. See is an eye doctor? It's just meant to be. For example, they have been able to observe that our blink rate goes down when using electronic devices causing dry eyes which can be linked to eyestrain.
Is it dangerous to Use blue blocking glasses?
Generally, it is not dangerous and can give you a boost of focus, but Dr. Kelley adds a cautionary tale about amber-tinted lenses turning your world into a sepia-toned movie scene. This can be dangerous if you,re using blue filter glasses while driving.
Resolve Headaches?
Can the blue tint blockers save you from screen-induced headaches? Well, maybe. Dr. See reckons they're like a Band-Aid for your eyeballs. Again, because the cause of headaches can be so varied. (A Band-Aid for your eyeballs? That sounds painful all by itself).
In the end, Utah's blue blocking passion is probably not saving your eyes. But hey, if you're feeling blue about your screen time, give blue blocking glasses a shot, At the very least, you'll look cool.
