Yawn, (excuse me) I was struggling to wake up this weekend. I mean I hit the snooze so many times that my phone alarm clock filed for a restraining order. I was talking to a colleague about my laziness and she said she was struggling to get up recently too. Are we in the great Southern Utah snooze-fest? Here are a few theories as to why the sandman has taken up residence in the red rocks creating our collective drowsiness:

Weather Whiplash

Southern Utah’s September weather has been bouncing between warm days and cooler nights, with highs in the 80s and lows dipping into the 50s. That kind of temperature swing can mess with your circadian rhythm, making it harder to stay alert during the day and sleep soundly at night.

Dry Air & Dehydration

Our low humidity and dry winds can lead to subtle dehydration, which often shows up as fatigue before thirst. If your water bottle’s been playing hide-and-seek, that could be part of the reason you feel like you are operating at 10% without a charger available.

Shortening Days

As the sun starts clocking out earlier, your body’s melatonin production ramps up sooner too. That means more yawns by late afternoon and a general sense of sluggishness as your internal clock adjusts.

Seasonal Shift Syndrome

Even if it’s not full-blown Northern Utah autumn, the transition from summer to fall can bring a dip in mood and energy. It’s like your brain’s trying to swap flip-flops for flannel slippers and isn’t quite ready.

If you have caught yourself recently–not sleeping per se–but enjoying an extended blink, it might help to know that you are not alone and maybe some of these theories can help you rationalize another nap.
