Southern Utah and Nevada Celebrate Rain But Watch For Hidden Dangers
We just got a nice rainstorm in Southern Utah which is reason to celebrate. We love and need moisture in our corner of the desert.

But there is danger in our desert where the water erodes without much resistance. Dave just wrote an article about an erosion hole outside of Beaver Dam which reminds us of the power of water erosion in our area.

With this in mind what should you do if you want to venture out and explore our post rainfall areas? Here are just a few reminders:
Slot Canyon Safety
Maybe the top concern is slot canyons. It may look safe where you are but remember there could be storm systems above you that you are not aware of. As most Southern Utahns will tell you a slot canyon can turn into a slot river in just minutes. Take extreme care and look for warning signs that can turn a pleasant scenic outing into a flood zone survival story.
Trail Erosion Awareness
I like to run in the great outdoor deserts and have a few favorite off-road trails. I often run off after a good rain to see how the trails have altered due to the rain. Not only should you be aware of possible flooding from higher terrain, but you should be aware that many times trails are also water ways. I am often surprised by how uneven a favorite trail is due to erosion. Be careful so you don't twist an ankle on the newly challenging trail.
Beware of Animal Behavior
Remember as you get out there that the animals have also experienced the rain; this can alter their behavior, move them out of burrows and make the wildlife less predictable. Keep an eye out for animal behavior, especially where you don't usually see animals and might let your guard down.
Get out there and check out your favorite spots that are now drenched with beautiful moisture but keep your wits about you so that the unexpected post rain conditions don't catch you off guard.
