It's Trail Time in Southern Nevada

As the triple-digit heat finally gives way to crisp mornings and golden afternoons, Southern Nevada transforms into a hiker’s paradise. Whether you're craving red rock scrambles or pine-scented switchbacks, fall is the perfect time to lace up your boots and explore these five standout trails.

Calico Tanks Trail (Red Rock Canyon)

This 2.2-mile out-and-back hike blends moderate scrambling with panoramic views of Las Vegas. We took this trail last year, it is so fun to feel like you are way out in the boonies only to round a turn and be presented with a view of the city. The trail winds through rust-colored sandstone and ends at a hidden water pocket—an unexpected desert gem.

Fire Wave Trail (Valley of Fire State Park)

Short but stunning, this 1.5-mile hike showcases swirling bands of red, orange, and beige sandstone. This one is best when tackled early in the day, the sun paints the rocks in surreal hues with it's morning rays.

Ice Box Canyon (Red Rock Canyon)

True to its name, this shaded 2.2-mile trail offers cool breezes and seasonal waterfalls not usually running in the fall. This hike is a refreshing escape from the desert sun in early fall and is ideal for intermediate hikers.

Mary Jane Falls (Mount Charleston)

At 3 miles round trip, this alpine trail climbs through pine forests to a seasonal waterfall. Beware of cooler temps, yes even this close to Las Vegas it gets cool on Mount Charleston in the fall. You will also be dazzled by the fall foliage, true the dry climate makes the trees less full, but it is still a favorite for locals seeking a mountain vibe.

Historic Railroad Trail** (Lake Mead)

Flat and family-friendly, this 7.5-mile trail follows a former rail line through tunnels with sweeping views of Lake Mead. It’s a peaceful walk with a dose of history.
