La Niña Weather Pattern Could Mean More Snow This Year

The National Weather Service is predicting La Niña to return this fall instead of the El Niño pattern from last year. This would indicate less wet weather for the south and more for the north. As Utah is in the middle, what can we expect in the Utah mountains?

Townlift.com says there has been more snow on some La Niña years, the last being in 2016-2017. It should bring wet weather in the north. However, there is another weather pattern that combined with La Niña, could indicate that the snow fall will be big.

Quasi-Decadal Oscillation or QSD for Short

This weather pattern causes a circular motion that trends over a decade or two. This oscillation takes place for over as much as 70 years and is still being understood. Basically, it could mean the wetter weather in the north could be pushed lower into Utah.

La Niña usually brings those wetter conditions to the north and this is why they think there may be more snow coming to Utah in 2024 and 2025. This is good news if you love winter sports or want to see the reservoirs fill up in the spring.
