See The Northern Lights Right Here in Utah

The northern lights will be visible this year and closer than you think.

As swinging singles me and my younger brother Matt were doing what swinging singles do in that happening time of life, hanging out in a grocery store parking lot at night in West Valley City. We had met some friends and were trying to decide where to go. I don’t remember what month it was, but it was cold and some flurries started to fly. We were watching the flecks fall when we noticed what looked like the northern lights. It looked just like what you see in exotic arctic pictures.

We checked our maps a few times to make sure we hadn’t ended up further north than we meant to, we rubbed our eyes, and then enjoyed this spectacular. We theorized about what could be causing the lights, thanks to our self appointed atmospheric science degrees we settled on the explanation that the flakes in the air were reflecting light, .

I don’t know why we didn’t talk to other people, in fact when I just talked to Dave about it I found out that he saw them twice in Utah and didn’t recognize them until he was in Alaska and saw them.

So now we get vindication that we saw what we thought we saw and you get a chance to see them. This year the northern lights will be visible in as low as Utah Valley. The brightest time to see them will be near the March equinox. Of course the darker nights will improve visibility of the lights this year and further north will increase your chance of seeing them. Just so you know the equinox this year is Tuesday March 19th.

So skip the Alaskan cruise this year and just head north and enjoy the northern lights from our very own state.
