Here’s the perfect thing to do with old Christmas light strings that no longer work. When you gather up your light display this year, put the non-working strands to the side. This fix will make next year's decorations that much better.

Extension Cords That Will Plug into Light Strands

When stringing light between bushes and trees, it is hard to make it look clean. Usually there is a trailing string of lights in between. If you purchase an extension cord to go between, there is the problem that it won’t plug into the light strand.

One prong is bigger than the other on extension cords, but it is not the same for Christmas tree lights. This problem is solved when you turn old strings that no longer work into the perfect extension cord between bushes and trees.

How to Make Old Strands into an Extension Cord

It is not hard to do. Most Christmas light strands have three wires. Simply cut one end near the plug and set it aside. Then unwind the wire with the lights on it and snip it at the end. Now if you strip the wires and twist the ends, you have the perfect extension cord.

This video shows how to get it done using a soldering iron. He also shows what wires to cut.

This is a simple project that will make your Christmas decorations look clean next year. It also gives you something to do during the months in-between as you plan a display that will impress the neighbors.
