South Salt Lake Tops Utah’s Highest Crime List And Property Theft Leads The Way

Although Utah consistently ranks among the nation's safest states, a new analysis suggests that crime remains concentrated in a relatively small number of communities, with southern Utah continuing to fare well by comparison.

A recently updated report from home security company Reolink ranked Utah's 10 cities with the highest overall crime rates using FBI crime statistics, focusing on both violent and property crimes. South Salt Lake topped the list, followed by Salt Lake City, Murray, Riverdale and Ogden. The remainder of the top 10 included West Valley City, Park City, Moab, Roosevelt and West Jordan. The report notes that property crimes, including vehicle theft, burglary and retail theft, account for much of the elevated crime seen in many of the state's larger urban areas.

One Southeast Utah City Made The List

For residents of southern Utah, however, the rankings provide some reassuring news. Neither Cedar City nor neighboring communities such as St. George appeared among the state's highest-crime cities. While Moab and Roosevelt were the only southern or eastern Utah communities included in the top 10, most of the highest crime rates were concentrated along the Wasatch Front, where larger populations and greater commercial activity typically generate more criminal incidents.

The report also emphasizes that Utah remains a relatively safe state overall. Even in the communities with the highest crime rates, property crimes account for the majority of reported offenses, while violent crime remains comparatively low by national standards. Reolink recommends common-sense precautions such as locking vehicles, securing homes, parking in well-lit areas and remaining aware of surroundings, particularly in busy commercial districts.

Experts caution that rankings based solely on crimes per capita do not always tell the complete story. Smaller cities can appear higher on such lists because a relatively small number of reported crimes can translate into a higher rate when divided by a smaller population. As a result, crime rankings should be viewed as one measure of public safety rather than a definitive assessment of any community.
