I have a real dilemma facing me today. It's kind of like if all your kids come in to you and ask, who do you like best. Your best option is to maintain silence and quickly run out of the room. There's no right answer.

But, unlike that situation, the dilemma I face today is one where there really is no wrong answer.

Today is National Doughnut Day, and the dilemma I face is where to go for a delicious celebration of the day?

For background, National Doughnut Day is celebrated annually in the United States on the first Friday of June. While today it’s often associated with free treats and long lines at local bakeries, the holiday has a meaningful origin rooted in service and support for American troops during World War I.

Thank The Salvation Army For National Doughnut Day

The day was established in 1938 by The Salvation Army in Chicago to honor the “Doughnut Lassies,” a group of women volunteers who served doughnuts to soldiers on the front lines in France. These women provided comfort, food, and a sense of home during the harsh realities of war. Doughnuts were chosen in part because they were relatively easy to make with limited equipment and ingredients in the field.

And it seems Utah has a huge love affair with these delightful round pastries. I was talking about this today on the radio and John (I'm sorry I didn't quite catch his last name) called up telling me about his experience selling doughnuts in northern Utah. Seems he not only had a retail location there, but also to kids out to various work places to sell doughnuts to workers on break.

They also sold doughnuts on holidays, and John said that on one Pioneer Day “we sold a thousand dozen doughnuts in Ogden to Salt Lake.” That's a lot of doughnuts. You can hear my conversation with John in this podcast.

But, still the dilemma remains. Where shall I go?

Well, here are some places I am mulling over.

DoughnutsVille. This has become kind of our default place to grab doughnuts. In part because when the chamber of commerce comes in to record their show here, they generally drop of a box of doughnuts for us, and I'm not sure how it happens but some of those doughnuts somehow make it home to my house. It's a mystery, but it's delicious. DoughnutsVille has locations in Cedar City and St. George, so they are not far away from most folks.

Lin's Fresh Market. I still think they have the best Alligator Jaws. And the doughnuts they make have been consistently good all the years I have lived in southern Utah. Plus they make killer peanut butter bars. Lin's has several locations in southern and central Utah.

Pinkbox. They might be one of the newest places, but they sure know how to make an impact and a good doughnut! I'm usually leery of places invading our area from Las Vegas, but as long as they keep the Blackjacks and Dirty Twists coming (and as long as they leave the Raiders in Vegas), they are more than welcome. So far, they only have the one location on St. George Blvd.

All great choices, and others too. Let me know what I missed in comments below or through our app. So what am I to do? Wait, hang on......my wife just texted me and said she had gone and got doughnuts and they are waiting at the house! So I think it's time to go home. But now I have a new dilemma. Which one will I eat first?
