Students Prepare For Graduation From Iron County School District
Another school year is coming to in conclusion here in southern Utah and while most of the students will be excited about their break before they return this fall, there are of course those students who will be concluding their time in the care of our local school districts and prepare for the rest of their life’s journey.
We were happy to welcome three graduating seniors from the Iron County School District to the radio show today, and we talked with them about the ceremonies this week, and what lies ahead.
Jared Sowers joined us from Canyon View High School, Audrey Burr is represented Launch High School, And McCoy Smith was here from Cedar High School.
Sowers led off the way by telling us about the graduation ceremony set for Canyon View High School saying, “Our graduation this year will be held at the SUU America First Event Center like it usually is. Our first run through practice is at 9:30 on Thursday I believe, which is the day of graduation. Graduation is on May 23rd, Thursday, at 5:00PM for Canyon View.”
But that will not be the first graduation ceremony on Thursday. That will be earlier in the afternoon for the graduating seniors from Cedar High School.
“Our graduation will be at one on Thursday”, according to Smith who continued, “Graduation practice is at 7:45 in the morning, so hopefully we'll be done in time for Canyon View, but I guess we'll see.” The Cedar High School graduation ceremony will also take place at the America First Event Center.
Launch High School students will, however, be the first graduating school in Iron County. Their graduation is set for Wednesday, May 22nd and Burr gave us some of the details. “It's at the SUU Hunter Center and our practice is at 2:00PM I believe, and then the actual ceremony is at six,” she told us.
Sowers reflected about his last year at Canyon View High School saying, “I feel like this year was a major success as far as involvement and activities went. Our homecoming was a blast, which I'm kind of biased about because I helped plan it, but we did it on top of the parking garages the first time in a couple of years and we had some electrical issues, but the mayor helped us figure that out.”
Smith also said the last year was memorable at Cedar High School telling us, “We had a few highlights. Not as many as we're maybe used to. (We did) lose to Canyon View a few times, but our girls golf just barely won state and track finished up. This year in 4A, we had a bunch of new schools moved down, so a lot of we had a lot more competition than (in past years)”
And for Launch High School, this will be the first year that students who are graduating that started attending Launch High School as freshmen. Students attend Launch High School on alternating days, and then attend the boundary schools on opposite days.
And what’s next for these graduating seniors? Both Sowers and Smith have received mission calls and will begin two year missionary service for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Burr is also planning on a mission but told us she has a stop to make first. “In the fall, I'm going to go to BYU for engineering and then after a year I'll go serve a mission for the church,” she told us.
The representative from Parowan High School was not able to make it to the studio this morning, but graduation ceremonies for Parowan will also be on Thursday, May 23rd at 7:00PM. It will be held at Parowan High School and tickets are required.
