Iron County Schools Gear Up For Kindergarten Registration
Kindergarten registration in Iron County School District will begin next month, giving families an important opportunity to prepare for the start of school. Steve Burton, Director of Elementary Education, joined kindergarten teacher Michelle Brunson and school nurse Tiffany Johnson to discuss the process and what parents should expect during an interview on the Big Picture Morning Show on KSUB radio.
Brunson shared the excitement that comes with teaching young learners every day. “I always say I have all the fun,” she said, explaining that students arrive eager to learn, see friends, and enjoy school. She also noted how much kindergarten has changed over the years. “Kindergarten is the new first grade,” Brunson said. “We are actually teaching them to read in kindergarten.”
Burton emphasized that registration is more than paperwork. He encouraged parents to attend because it helps schools plan for enrollment, gives staff a chance to complete a short assessment, and provides children with early exposure to the school environment. Families may register at any school site, even if they cannot attend the event at their assigned school.
All Day Registration Sessions To Be Held At All Elementary Schools
The district will continue offering all-day kindergarten across all elementary schools. Burton said the results have been strong, with students entering first grade better prepared. Johnson added that while the transition can feel challenging at the beginning of the year, teachers help students adjust and “by the end of the year, they love it.”
Parents should also be ready with required documents. Johnson listed the essentials: “An official birth certificate, address verification, guardian ID, and an immunization record.” She noted that the health department will be present at each registration site to provide needed vaccinations.
Registration can take place throughout the month, and online registration will be available ahead of time, though families are still encouraged to attend in person for screenings such as hearing and vision checks.

For Brunson, the goal is creating a positive first experience with school. “That’s our goal,” she said, “to make education a fun and exciting time for them.”
